Doubts exist concerning the pedigree of Bowes
The General Stud Book [1891 edition] states that Bowes is a half-sister to Surley (1708) and Whitefoot (1709). Breeder Cuthbert Routh's stud book says that Mr Hutton's Surley "was gott by his Gray Barb, his dam by ye Royall Colt, her dam by Byerley Turk, her dam by Bustler, her dam by a Barb, and her dam by Bay Dodsworth" Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse [C.M. Prior 1924, page 30], which is the lineage of Family 8.
As the half-siblings Bowes, Surley and Whitefoot are said by the GSB to have all been bred by Mr. Hutton, it appears that Bowes and her descendants should be moved from Family 2 into Family 8
Grandam of Mab (1747 King's Plate [mares] Malton, 1748 King's Plate [mares] Newmarket); 3rd dam of Silvio (1759 Great Subscription Purse [5yo division] York, 1764 Richmond Gold Cup); and of Weasel (1771 King's Plate Lichfield)
